Winthrop's New Year's Eve Fireworks Show

Winthrop's New Year's Eve Fireworks show will take place on Monday, December 31 at 6pm.

This is one of the finest fireworks shows in the state!  Don't miss the action. The fireworks will begin promptly at 6pm (which we like to call "Methow Midnight").  This is a great family event and allows you to ring in the New Year and be in bed early enough to ski the next day!
Some of the best viewing locations are:
  • Right in downtown Winthrop with the fantastic backdrop of our western town.
  • From the Winthrop Ice Rink!  How magical is it to ice skate and watch the fireworks.
  • From a hotel hot tub.  There are a number of local hotels that have great views of the show but be sure to book in advance. The holiday weekend always sells out.
Enjoy the show and Happy New Year!

American Pickers Visit, Film and Pick Winthrop!

The very popular History Channel show American Pickers came to Winthrop to do some "western freestyling".  Just as the show goes they found some great items and heard some incredible stories from "the people who have a history all their own".

While in Winthrop, Mike and his brother Robbie (Frank was back in Iowa) picked Winthrop's downtown iconic store the White Buck Trading Company and Museum. The great part is that the public is welcome to pick the White Buck anytime and enjoy their incredible old time museum.  Be sure to stop in next time you are in Winthrop.

We had a great time while the American Pickers were in town. Residents and Visitors alike love this show. It was an honor and a whole lot of fun to have them visit our town.  No word yet on when the Winthrop episode will air on the History Channel but we will certainly update this site when we know the date.

The great skiing goes on and on

The Methow Valley Sport Trails Association (MVSTA) will be will be grooming the cross-country ski trails through all of March! They will keep grooming the areas that will allow the best skiing through the month. As always, the MVSTA grooming report will provide the latest information! It just keeps snowing and snowing in Winthrop and the skiing is fantastic!  Don't miss this opportunity to ski this spring!  Many Winthrop hotels are running fantastic Spring specials.

Video of the Winthrop Balloon Roundup Wedding

During the 15th Annual Winthrop Balloon Round-up a couple was married in one of the hot air balloons. Here is the video of the event.  The video was taken by flying drones that circled the balloon. Many times in the video you can see and hear the drones in the background.  Note that Morning Star Hot Air Balloon Company is taking reservations for next year. What a great way to get married!

When will the North Cascades Pass Open?

"When will the North Cascades Pass open?"  is the burning Methow Valley question in spring.

The latest report from the Washington State Department of Transportation is,
"Crews found snow depths to be lower than last year. While we can't start work until the avalanche threat at Stevens Pass diminishes, we're tentatively planning to start the spring clearing the last week of March and are hopeful of opening the first week in May."

You can follow the DOT's progress via their website and sign up for their North Cascade Highway email update which are very entertaining and packed with great photos.

Here's to spring!

Another Fantastic Balloon Festival

The 15th Annual Winthrop Balloon Roundup was another smashing success. Great weather, a balloon wedding and flying drones made the sky candy even more memorable!  We can't wait for next year's balloon festival. Mark your calendars now for March 1-3, 2013 you won't want to miss it.
